The Magic of the Theremin

The theremin is the only instrument in the world that is played without being touched.

It is also one of the first electronic instruments ever invented (end of 1919, beginning of 1920)

Its inventor is the Russian Physicist Leon Theremin (his westernized name) who patented the instrument in America in 1928.

How the Theremin Works

There are two antennas attached to the instrument that emit electromagnetic fields.

By interrupting these fields the player can affect the pitch and volume of the theremin, creating eerie and ethereal music.

Leon Theremin demonstrated the instrument to Vladimir Lenin who was so impressed that he sent the physicist across Russia, Europe and eventually the United States to demo his invention.

He remained in USA for eleven years where he and his instrument caught the attention of Clara Rockmore who went on to become the worlds greatest theremin virtuoso.
